In the settings you can choose NEXTgen/metaslider (plugins I have installed) galleries as an option for what to display, though it does not let me choose any particular gallery and when I add the shortcode in a post nothing appears.
How can I use the plugin to display a gallery without having to add every image as a post?

Really sorry about your requirement here. However our plugin can only handle post/pages/post types. It is not able to work with galleries.
